요약 : Whether they address the “who did what to whom” of a specific case or debate more academic issues such as adult memory or children's suggestibility, contemporary conflicts around child sexual abuse have generally focused on contested “facts.” Little attention has been paid to the larger sociopolitical contexts surrounding these debates. This dissertation research examines controversies around child sexual abuse from a sociological perspective and uses sociological theory to examine some of the interests, positions, constituencies, and social conditions reflected in contemporary conflicts and claimsmaking around child sexual abuse. Forty well-known authorities on issues related to child sexual abuse were interviewed for the study and asked to discuss what they believe some of the contested issues around child sexual abuse are and what they might represent. The interview materials support the perception that there are two fairly well-defined camps of opinion on many of the issues surrounding child sexual abuse, but they also suggests that there are important differences of opinion within as well as between groups. Some of these intra- and inter-group involve disagreements about “what the research says,” but others involve moral and political issues that are unlikely to be resolved scientifically. Since conflicts around child sexual abuse appear to be connected to other, larger, concerns about the stability of the family, gender conflicts, the “science wars,” and the role of government, an over-reliance on the kinds of questions that can be addressed using quantitative methods may have allowed the conversation around what to do about adult/child sexual behavior to become overly narrow.
