■520    ▼aThe  study  is  guided  by  the  premise  that  evangelical  activity  among  Chinese  must  invite  dialogue  with  Confucians.  It  is  not  a  comparative  study  of  Christianity  and  Confucianism  but  rather  a  reflection  on  Christian  theology  itself  in  light  of  contemporary  theological  understandings.  It  explores  ways  in  which  Christian  theology  may  be  made  receptive  to  such  dialogue.
■520    ▼aIn  addressing  the  foundational  theological  issues,  the  study  examines  the  issues  of  creation,  the  imago  Dei  and  sin  and  the  Confucian  themes  of  jen  and  li.  The  author  argues  that  the  notion  of  full  human  personhood  is  the  most  appropriate  locus  for  dialogue  on  the  core  issues  of  Christianity.  A  distinction  is  also  drawn  between  a  sin-guilt  and  sin-shame  orientation  to  the  gospel.
■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  then  presents  a  theoretical  discussion  on  the  nature  of  being  human.  Perspectives  from  various  disciplines  are  integrated  with  Christian  theological  thinking.  A  model  of  human  nature  based  on  four  thrusts  is  proposed--a  thrust  for  growth,  a  thrust  for  relatedness,  a  thrust  for  differentiation,  and  a  thrust  for  meaning.
■520    ▼aSubsequent  chapters  deal  with  biblical  topics.  The  law  is  viewed  as  a  charter  of  freedom  for  attaining  full  human  personhood.  Old  Testament  Wisdom  is  presented  as  being  international  in  both  origin  and  appeal.  The  author  argues  that  this  intercultural  amenability  of  Israel's  wisdom  should  speak  to  Christians  today  about  their  shared  humanity  with  Confucians.
■520    ▼aWith  reference  to  the  New  Testament  and  Christology,  the  author  explores  contemporary  perspectives  on  Christ's  humanity.  Once  the  issue  of  incarnation  is  explored,  the  argument  is  presented  that  in  dialogue  with  Confucians,  the  gospel  should  be  presented  with  emphasis  on  the  resurrection  as  the  basis  for  Christ's  offering  of  full  personhood  to  all  humanity.
■520    ▼aIn  conclusion,  the  author  argues  that  both  the  Old  and  New  Testaments  support  the  thesis  that  God  is  for  humanity  in  this  present  world.  Therefore  it  would  be  a  serious  mistake  for  Christians  to  fail  to  find  contact  points  for  dialogue  with  Confucians.  The  most  promising  locus  for  such  dialogue,  based  on  the  findings  of  this  study,  is  shared  humanity.
