■520    ▼aCreation  theology  is  represented  in  the  major  sections  of  the  Old  Testament  (law,  prophets,  and  writings).  Yahweh  is  depicted  as  the  sovereign  king  over  creation  by  a  variety  of  metaphors  and  by  various  modes  of  creation.  Creation  emerges  as  a  declaration  of  God's  continued  mastery  over  his  created  order  as  creation  theology  is  intertwined  with  God's  dealings  in  the  context  of  history.  Those  who  are  connected  to  the  creator  by  faith  find  hope  that  the  creator  is  still  willing  and  able  to  support  them.
■520    ▼aPast  research,  especially  von  Rad's  views,  relegated  these  expressions  of  creation  to  a  subordinate  position  in  favor  of  salvation  history.  Creation  in  Genesis  was  perceived  as  a  prologue  to  history.  The  Psalter's  incorporation  of  the  images  of  creation  and  the  creator  always  pointed  toward  deliverance.  When  the  prophets,  especially  the  messages  in  Isaiah  40-66,  used  creation,  it  was  for  the  greater  purpose  of  proclaiming  salvation.
■520    ▼aAround  1970,  voices  in  protest  of  subordinating  creation  began  to  be  heard.  Creation  was  not  lost  in  the  complex  of  salvation  history,  but  serves  as  the  basis  for  proclaiming  faith  in  Yahweh.  This  is  evident  in  a  close  examination  of  Isaiah  40-66.
■520    ▼aThe  thrust  of  the  study  focuses  on  Isaiah  40-66  and  seeks  to  demonstrate  that  creation  theology  in  these  prophecies  stands  as  an  independent  tradition.  Its  place  in  Old  Testament  theology  does  not  hinge  on  its  relationship  to  salvation  history.  Creation  theology  serves  as  the  guiding  motif  for  some  of  the  prophet's  key  messages.  It  is  used  to  restore  hope  in  Yahweh  and  to  preserve  the  faith  of  the  exiles  who  were  in  danger  of  apostasy.  The  historical  traditions  were  inept  by  themselves  to  revive  the  ailing  faith  of  the  exiles.
■520    ▼aWhen  other  creation  texts  outside  of  Isaiah  40-66  are  examined  apart  from  a  salvation  history  grid,  they  too  play  vital  roles  in  the  message  of  the  Old  Testament.  Genesis'  creation  affirms  the  supremacy  of  God;  the  Psalter  makes  creation  an  essential  affirmation  for  deliverance;  and  wisdom  finds  order  in  life  from  the  perspective  of  creation.
