■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  was  to  discover  the  abiding  theological  significance  of  the  vineyard  motif  in  the  Old  Testament.  Prior  to  an  exegetical  study  on  the  vine  and  vineyard  passages,  a  background  study  on  the  linguistic,  viticultural,  socio-economic,  religious  and  symbolic  significance  concerning  the  subject  was  necessary.
■520    ▼aChapter  one  examined  the  terms  "GFN"  and  "KRM"  in  the  Northwest  Semitic  linguistic  group.  The  origin,  development,  and  actual  practice  of  viticulture  in  ancient  Israel  was  discussed  in  chapter  two,  followed  by  the  socio-economic  issues  related  to  land  and  vineyard  in  Israelite  society  in  the  succeeding  chapter.  Chapter  four  dealt  with  the  subject  of  vineyard  in  ancient  Near  Eastern  religious  settings.  The  symbolic  significance  of  vine  and  vineyard  in  the  Old  Testament  was  discussed  in  chapter  five.
■520    ▼aChapter  six  examined  six  relevant  passages  from  the  Old  Testament.  The  theological  significance  communicated  through  the  vineyard  motif  in  the  Old  Testament  paralleled  the  salvation  history  of  Yahweh  concerning  his  people.  Various  aspects  of  the  tumultuous  but  inseparable  relationship  between  Yahweh  and  Israel  were  communicated  effectively  through  this  motif.
■520    ▼aChapter  seven  briefly  addressed  the  same  subject  in  the  New  Testament  while  the  final  chapter  presented  the  summary  of  the  dissertation.  Both  the  significance  of  the  dissertation  and  the  direction  of  possible  future  research  were  highlighted.
