■520    ▼aThe  creation  stories  are  in  eclipse  in  contemporary  theology.  They  are  found  embodied  in  the  Priestly  and  Yahwist  sources  of  Genesis  1-2.  They  are  thought  to  take  a  backseat  to  the  interest  in  history  or  reduced  to  a  relationship  between  God  and  creation.
■520    ▼aThe  main  thrust  of  this  study  is  a  taxonomy  of  approaches  of  five  scholars  to  the  creation  stories  in  the  Old  Testament.  The  five  scholars  are  Gerhard  von  Rad,  Claus  Westermann,  Brevard  Childs,  Walter  Brueggemann,  and  Willem  VanGemeren.  As  far  as  the  structure  of  this  essay  is  concerned,  the  introductory  material  is  given  in  chapter  1.  The  positions  of  the  five  scholars  are  presented  and  evaluated  in  chapters  2  to  6.  Chapter  7  is  the  conclusion.
■520    ▼aFor  von  Rad,  traditio-historical  process  explains  the  locus  of  creation  in  Israel's  faith.  By  emphasizing  the  primacy  of  Heilsgeschichte  upon  the  creation  stories,  he  has  to  face  the  consequences.  Creation  is  subordinate  to  redemption  and  separated  from  history.
■520    ▼aAccording  to  Westermann,  phenomenological  unities  describe  the  locus  of  creating  humanity.  Creation  and  salvation  are  in  dialectical  synthesis.  Therefore,  the  blessing  theme  is  a  full  counterpart  to  that  deliverance.  The  consequence  arises.  The  biblical  inspiration  of  creation  stories  is  at  stake.
■520    ▼aIn  his  canonical  approach,  Childs  focuses  attention  on  the  final  form  of  the  biblical  text.  God  is  known  through  creation.  The  Old  and  New  Testaments  point  faithfully  to  the  divine  reality  of  Christ.  The  consequences  of  his  thesis  are:  he  jeopardizes  the  historical  validation  of  revelation  and  blurs  the  theological  concern  of  salvation.
■520    ▼aUtilizing  sociological  approach,  Brueggemann  has  understood  Gen  1  as  a  subversive  text  addressed  to  Israelite  exiles  in  the  sixth-century  in  Babylon.  Creation  theology  becomes  imperial  propaganda  and  ideology.  As  a  consequence  of  suggesting  contradictory  models,  in  terms  of  application,  they  cannot  be  exercised  and  Brueggemann  himself  admits  it.
■520    ▼aVanGemeren  interprets  that  creation  is  nuanced  in  a  triadic  focal  schema  and  in  terms  of  covenant.  In  terms  of  covenant,  his  view  can  be  traced  in  the  works  of  the  other  covenant  theologians.  However,  the  threefold-focal  interpretation  opens  the  possibility  of  blurring  the  notion  of  the  inspired  text.
