요약 : The purpose of this dissertation is to set forth the implications for pastoral ministry which grow out of the scriptural teaching of divorce and remarriage. The dialogue between the theology and ministry in this study provides an illustration of how pastoral theology works. Sources used include journal articles and books which address issues related to divorce and remarriage, commentaries on relevant scriptural passages, citations from the Talmud, and modern clinical and statistical findings.

요약 : In order to provide a foundation for the scriptural teaching of divorce and remarriage, the study begins with a discussion of the divine ideal for marriage. In Scripture, marriage belongs to the category of relationships known as covenants. Although covenants are intended to be binding for life, they are not considered indissoluble. Divorce is permitted in both the Old and New Testaments where the covenant of marriage has been broken. That which breaks the marriage covenant is sexual unfaithfulness, described by the term erwat dabar in the Old Testament and by porneia in the New Testament. Scripture also allows for remarriage in cases where the covenant of marriage has been dissolved.

요약 : The actual experience of pastoral ministry results in a deepened understanding of Scripture. One who uses a single verse of Scripture as a "prooftext" to support a particular position on the biblical teaching of divorce and remarriage fails to take into consideration the entire context of Scripture. The complexities which arise out of pastoral practice give impetus to a more thorough study of Scripture. In this sense, pastoral theology moves from practice to theology.

요약 : Pastoral theology also moves from theology to practice. Implications for pastoral care which grow out of the scriptural teaching of divorce and remarriage include the need for preventive ministry (through teaching), crisis care (through counseling), and promoting wholeness in the lives of those who have suffered from the trauma of divorce (through the fellowship of the church body). This study provides an example of how moving from theology to practice and from practice to theology contributes to the greater knowledge of each.
