■520    ▼aIn  spite  of  the  assertions  by  much  of  Old  Testament  scholarship,  this  dissertation  contends  there  is  a  messianic  influence  of  the  Davidic  covenant  on  the  biblical  understanding  of  the  Messiah.  This  study  traces  the  covenant  motif  from  the  first  few  chapters  of  the  Bible  through  the  latest  biblical  usages  of  the  Davidic  covenant,  and  culminates  in  highlighting  the  theological  place  of  the  Davidic  covenant  in  theology.
■520    ▼aChapter  One  presents  the  pre-Davidic  covenants.  The  approach  is  from  a  canonical  perspective  and  the  chapter  highlights  the  development  of  Israelite  understanding  of  its  continuing  relationship  with  Yahweh.  The  exegetical  investigation  asserts  that  there  is  a  coherent  "story"  being  related  through  these  Noahic,  Abrahamic,  and  Sinaitic  covenants.
■520    ▼aChapter  Two  is  an  historical-grammatical  examination  of  2  Sam.  7:1-17,  the  Davidic  covenant.  It  is  set  in  its  literary  context  and  is  explained  linguistically  and  theologically.  One  conclusion  is  the  literary  and  theological  centrality  of  the  Davidic  covenant  in  the  entire  "deuteronomistic"  history.  The  second  part  of  the  chapter  sets  the  whole  issue  of  kingship  into  its  historical  and  canonical  framework.  In  the  "deuteronomistic"  history  kingship  is  presented  positively  and  is  guided  by  covenantal  stipulations.
■520    ▼aChapter  Three  discusses  the  messianic  meaning  of  the  Davidic  covenant  with  the  other  Old  Testament  covenants.  They  are  connected  both  thematically  and  linguistically,  pointing  forward  to  "one  yet  to  come."  The  second  part  of  the  chapter  investigates  how  later  biblical  writers  emphasize  a  future  "son  of  David"  by  utilizing  the  Davidic  covenant.
