■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  part  of  a  larger  goal  to  provide  a  set  of  reference  books  of  musical  terms  used  in  Scripture,  based  on  the  original  Hebrew  and  Greek  texts,  to  help  ministers  and  church  musicians  more  accurately  and  completely  study  the  Scriptures  in  relation  to  music.  The  scope  encompasses  Hebrew  terms  found  in  the  Old  Testament  relating  music  to  the  acts  of  praise  and  thanksgiving.  A  major  goal  of  this  study  is  to  help  bridge  the  gap  between  music  and  theology,  encouraging  musicians  to  consider  what  the  Bible  says  about  music  within  the  fabric  of  theology  and  helping  theologians  appreciate  the  musical  aspects  of  the  Bible  that  surround  and  celebrate  theology.
■520    ▼aThe  Introduction  describes  the  format  of  the  chapters  and  explains  the  transliteration  and  parsing  of  the  Hebrew  and  Greek  terms  for  those  who  are  not  familiar  with  the  biblical  languages.  Part  One  contains  the  major  portion  of  the  study,  word  studies  on  27  Hebrew  terms  used  in  the  context  of  praise  and  thanksgiving  607  times  in  376  verses  and  58  inscriptions.  Each  word  study  chapter  includes  a  discussion  of  the  origin  and  meaning  of  the  term,  an  analysis  of  the  occurrences  of  the  term  grouped  according  to  textual  form,  and  a  summary  discussing  the  use  of  the  term  in  the  Old  Testament.
■520    ▼aPart  Two  of  the  study  is  an  evaluation  of  the  data  compiled  in  Part  One  concerning  the  relationship  of  praise  and  thanksgiving  to  music  in  the  Old  Testament.  Part  Two  begins  with  the  divine  themes  of  praise  and  thanksgiving  and  then  explores  the  distinctive  expressions  of  praise  and  thanksgiving  in  the  rich  vocabulary  of  the  Old  Testament.  The  discussion  then  focuses  on  relational  contexts  of  praise  and  thanksgiving  in  the  Old  Testament.  The  final  portions  of  Part  Two  consider  common  roles  and  common  qualities  of  praise  and  thanksgiving.  In  the  conclusion  several  common  threads  that  appear  throughout  the  word  studies  are  drawn  together  to  undergird  the  significance  of  music  to  biblical  worship.
