■520    ▼aThis  study  investigates  corporate  elements  in  Pauline  anthropology  in  the  light  of  his  usage  and  background.  It  aims  to  determine  whether  and  in  what  respect  Paul  understands  man  as  a  corporate  being.  It  also  seeks  to  find  possible  backgrounds  of  his  thought  in  relation  to  his  view  of  man.
■520    ▼aSince  anthropology  is  an  underlying  assumption  rather  than  a  specific  Pauline  theme,  it  cannot  be  isolated  and  studied  independently  from  the  rest  of  his  thought.  This  study,  therefore,  begins  with  more  prominent  themes  in  which  Paul's  assumption  of  corporate  anthropology  is  evident,  that  is,  in  his  teaching  about  Christ  and  about  the  church.  If  the  study  demonstrates  that  Paul  understands  Christ  as  a  corporate  person  in  whom  believers  are  included  and  that  the  church  is  a  corporate  solidarity  inclusive  of  Christ  and  believers,  it  will  confirm  a  broader  Pauline  assumption  of  the  solidarity  of  believers  in  particular  and  of  human  beings  in  general.  The  corporate  elements  under  investigation,  therefore,  include  the  following:  Paul's  use  of  the  math  f  g3/gsuphsp  sp="0.167"sup?Eqn  TeX  style="text"hsp  sp="-0.167"  hsp  sp="-0.167"hsp  sp="-0.167",?Eqn  TeX  endstyle="text"  /sup/suphsp  sp="-0.167"hsp  sp="-0.167"hsp  sp="0.167"  hsp  sp="0.167"gn/ghsp  sp="0.167"hsp  sp="0.265"rmX  gr/ggi/ggs/ggt/gaacgw/g/acac&d14;/ac/ainf  hsp  sp="0.167"inf?Eqn  TeX  style="text"hsp  sp="-0.167"  hsp  sp="-0.167"hsp  sp="-0.167"hsp  sp="-0.167".?Eqn  TeX  endstyle="text"  /inf/inf/rm/f  /math  formula  and  its  related  terms  (ch.  1),  (2)  his  comparison  and  contrast  of  Adam  and  Christ  (ch.  2),  (3)  his  concept  of  the  church  as  the  body  of  Christ  (ch.  3),  (4)  his  concept  of  the  church  as  the  temple,  the  house,  and  the  building  of  God  (ch.  4),  and  (5)  his  view  of  the  sexual  union  regarded  as  "one  flesh"  (ch.  5).
■520    ▼aEach  chapter  of  the  study  takes  the  following  procedure.  First,  it  analyzes  the  relevant  Pauline  texts  in  the  grammatical  and  literary  perspective.  Second,  it  draws  from  the  analysis  theological  implications  for  Paul's  view  of  man,  making  use  of  the  different  evaluations  and  interpretations  of  his  thought  in  modern  literature.  Third,  it  seeks  to  find  possible  backgrounds  of  Paul's  conception  in  Hellenism,  in  Judaism,  in  the  Old  Testament,  and  in  the  teachings  of  Jesus.
■520    ▼aThis  study  reaches  the  conclusion  that  Paul  understands  man  not  only  as  an  individual  but  also  as  a  corporate  being  and  that  his  corporate  anthropology  reflects  to  a  great  extent  the  Old  Testament  conception  of  the  corporate  solidarity  of  man.
