■520    ▼aDuring  the  past  twenty-five  years,  with  the  emergence  of  a  quadrilateral  construction  applied  to  the  thought  of  John  Wesley  concerning  legitimate  religious  authority,  the  idea  of  a  transcendent  Word  of  God,  in  which  God  speaks,  and  through  which  God  works,  as  in  no  other  place,  has  been  considerably  diminished  in  the  United  Methodist  Church.  That  which  is  gained  through  a  quadrilateral  construction  is  impressive,  for  all  agree  the  Bible  must  be  in  touch  with  the  real  world,  and  this  is  accomplished  through  experience,  reason,  and  tradition.  However,  what  has  been  lost  is  greater  than  any  gain,  for  in  a  quadrilateral  construction,  the  Word  of  God  is  ultimately  lowered  to  the  level  of  hermeneutic,  and  the  concept  of  a  transcendent  written  Word  of  God  that  bears  witness  to  the  living  Word  of  God,  our  Lord  and  Saviour  Jesus  Christ,  is  forfeited.  This  dissertation  is  an  attempt  to  assist  in  the  discovering  once  again  of  the  transcendent  Word  made  real  in  the  life  of  the  believer,  and  along  with  that  purpose,  in  some  small  way,  to  assist  the  United  Methodist  Church  in  finding  once  again  an  unfaltering  love  for  the  Bible.
■520    ▼aChapter  One  of  this  dissertation  is  a  review  of  the  issues  involved  in  the  study  of  authority  in  the  theology  of  John  Wesley,  along  with  an  assessment  of  the  current  state  of  scholarship  relative  to  this  subject.  Chapter  Two  is  an  overview  of  the  development  in  seventeenth-century  England  of  not  only  Anglican  theological  method,  but  also  of  the  new  science  and  the  consequent  emergence  of  the  modern  world.
■520    ▼aChapter  Three  begins  a  brief  study  of  Wesley  relative  to  the  three  beginnings  of  Methodism  at  Oxford,  Georgia,  and  Fetter  Lane.  Chapter  Four  is  the  beginning  of  an  extended  analysis  of  Wesley's  primary  works,  commencing  with  the  sermons  and  the  Explanatory  Notes  Upon  the  New  Testament.  Chapter  Five  is  an  analysis  of  Wesley's  tracts  and  treatises,  with  primary  emphasis  given  to  the  Doctrine  of  Original  Sin.  Chapter  Six  is  an  analysis  of  Wesley's  controversial  letters,  the  Appeals,  and  of  the  particular  place  of  reason  in  his  thought.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  concludes  with  a  model  of  authority  in  the  thought  of  John  Wesley  constructed  from  his  primary  works.  It  is  also  believed  that  this  is  a  working  model  of  the  structure  of  authority  in  the  thought  of  Wesley,  and  is  most  valid  for  the  Christian  Church  today  in  the  definition  of  faith  and  practice.
