요약 : John Calvin posits that miraculous gifts such as healing, exorcism, and prophecy ceased at the close of the apostolic era. Likewise, God no longer reveals himself by means such as angelic appearances, visions, and voices from heaven. This doctrine of the cessation of miracles, lacking in Scripture, is expressed as early as Augustine. In the sixteenth century, it takes on new and urgent significance. Protestants such as Calvin use this doctrine to refute modern Catholic miracles, especially those associated with the sacraments and the saints, and to resist Catholic demands for new Protestant miracles. The doctrine also rebuts certain Radical claims to prophetic gifts and new revelation.
초록/해제
요약 : The doctrine of the cessation of miracles is not only an essential (and, in the secondary literature, neglected) piece of Protestant polemic; it also illumines Calvin's theology at critical points. The sufficiency of God's word, revealed in Christ, recorded in Scripture, and preached by the minister, renders modern miracles unnecessary. Miracles as temporary sacraments or signs have been replaced by the two permanent signs or sacraments of the church: baptism and the Lords supper.
초록/해제
요약 : The cessation of miracles assumes not only the distinction between temporary and permanent facets of New Testament Christianity, but a radical discontinuity between the apostolic and post-apostolic churches. The miracles of Christ and the apostles were given for a time, to establish the infant gospel, and then ceased. Their withdrawal was also due to ingratitude and abuse. While biblical miracles serve as examples of faith and as analogies of spiritual blessings, they are not to be repeated in the present.
초록/해제
요약 : This discontinuity does not apply to false miracles, those worked by Satan and his agents, human and demonic. They serve God's purposes in every age, punishing the wicked and testing the righteous. The withdrawal of miracles does not mean the absence of divine power in the modern world, however. God continues to act with power in the “ordinary” miracles of baptism and the supper, in countless miracles of creation and providence; in the survival and triumph of the word; and in the Reformation itself.
