■520    ▼aThe  cultural  shift  from  a  modern  to  a  post-modern  mindset  will  invariably  impact  the  way  the  Church  engages  in  spiritual  formation.  This  professional  project  investigates  the  dilemma  posed  by  these  cultural  transitions  on  our  current  understanding  and  practice  of  spiritual  formation  in  the  local  congregation.  It  is  argued  that  the  ancient  model  of  wisdom  literature  provides  a  paradigm  for  engaging  in  the  spiritual  formation  process.  Using  the  books  of  Job,  Proverbs,  Ecclesiastes,  and  Song  of  Songs,  the  pastor  and  Christian  educator  is  provided  with  a  rich  and  varied  tapestry  of  approaches  to  the  dilemma  of  spiritual  formation  in  a  post-modern  context.  From  the  dissent  of  Job  to  the  cynicism  of  Ecclesiastes,  wisdom  literature  speaks  with  clarity  and  authenticity  to  the  post-modern  mind.
■520    ▼aThis  professional  project  reviews  the  history  of  spiritual  formation  from  the  Early  Church  to  the  modern  evangelical  tradition.  The  influence  of  Greek  philosophy  and  the  university  model  of  education  during  the  late  Middle  Ages  on  our  current  approach  to  spiritual  formation  is  responsible  in  part  for  the  current  predicament.  The  challenge  of  spiritual  formation  in  a  post-modern  context  requires  the  pastor  and  church  educator  to  develop  a  methodology  that  transforms  the  spiritual  formation  process.  This  transformation  must  include  the  following  significant  shifts:  from  image  to  substance,  from  fragmentation  to  integration,  from  proposition  to  passion,  from  association  to  identity,  and  finally  from  a  consumer  orientation  to  participation  in  a  common  mission.  I  conclude  by  making  some  practical  observations  concerning  the  implementation  of  this  new  methodology  for  the  local  church.
