요약 : In order to articulate a Korean Confucian-Christian theory of justification, sanctification, and salvation, this study investigates the theological anthropology of Robert C. Neville and the inclusive humanism of Tu Wei-ming. Neville and Tu represent contemporary Christian and Confucian approaches to religious anthropology; furthermore, they have engaged in an extended and productive dialogical encounter on the themes of comparative thought, and religious renewal in Asia and North America. I argue that Neville's and Tu's insights into human nature have great relevance for a comparative, contemporary Korean theology by focusing on the role of a reformed version of filial piety as a new component of Korean theology.

요약 : The main method I follow is a point-by-point comparison of Neville's Christian vision of the created, discursive, embodied, and covenanted person and Tu's description of the co-creative, physically embedded person who forms the conduit of the vital energy of heaven and earth. Neville's and Tu's discussions of human nature and other themes related to their theological anthropology provide three main insights for Korean theology; (1) the human possibility and responsibility for salvation, (2) the importance of human bodily incarnation as primordial fact of human existence, and (3) the complex interweaving of the notions of anthropology and soteriology with the divine reality.
초록/해제
요약 : A proximate goal of the dissertation is to contribute to the growing theological and philosophical discipline of comparative theology. Comparative theology is predicated on the fact of contemporary religious pluralism and the emergence of an ecumenical global discourse. Comparative theology seeks to understand the historical and normative dimensions of the interaction of religious traditions and persons and to illumine the differences and commonalities between and among religious traditions and persons. Hence the task of comparative theology is both narrative and normative as well as constructive.

요약 : Comparative theology also embraces the notion that living religious traditions can gain significant new insights from other traditions. The articulation of filial piety as a potentially key element of contemporary Korean Christian theology is an example of such creative appropriation of a Confucian theme for the Christian praxis of sanctification and ultimately the soteriology of divine grace and transformation.
초록/해제
요약 : The ultimate aim of the theological project begun in this dissertation is the articulation of a Korean Confucian-Christian notion of justification, sanctification, and salvation by means of a reformed concept of filial piety. Both Neville and Tu construe human nature to be such that any living theology will reflect the creative engagement of Christian theologians as public intellectuals in search of the articulation of the gospel as the word of God encounters novel human situations.
