■520    ▼aThis  doctoral  project  addresses  the  question:  In  what  ways  can  the  questions  of  Jesus  be  used  as  an  efficacious  model  of  communicating  biblical  truth  in  ministry?  More  specifically,  how  can  I  improve  my  ministry  style  by  studying  Jesus'  use  of  questions  in  the  New  Testament?  The  question  comes  in  the  context  of  ministry  at  Grace  Bible  Church,  Virginia  Beach,  Virginia.
■520    ▼aFew  studies  are  expressly  devoted  to  analysis  of  the  questions  as  a  unit.  Contrary  to  other  examinations  of  the  questions  of  Jesus,  this  study  approaches  Jesus'  questions  as  a  literary  whole.  While  the  study  surveys  only  some  of  the  more  than  three  hundred  questions  Jesus  asks,  characteristics  of  individual  questions  are  synthesized  into  a  set  of  principles,  or  rules,  that  are  true  of  any  single  question  and  concurrently  true  of  every  question  Jesus  asked.  The  project  posits  three  premises  about  Jesus'  use  of  questioning:  (1) not  once  in  all  the  questions  that  Jesus  asked  did  He  ever  ask  a  question  because  He  needed  to  know  the  answer,  (2) whenever  Jesus  asked  two  or  more  questions  in  a  series,  they  were  identical  in  purpose,  and  (3) the  questions  of  Jesus  are  unique  enough  to  be  recognized  as  a  distinct  and  separate  genre  of  biblical  literature.  In  addition,  this  study  suggests:  (1) Jesus  asked  questions  in  a  way  that  no  one  before  or  since  has  ever  done,  (2) Jesus  did  not  ask  questions  simply  to  gather  information  or  secure  facts,  (3) with  Jesus,  we  never  have  to  wonder  whether  the  correct  question  was  being  asked,  and  (4) Jesus'  use  of  questions  emphasized  inward  change.
■520    ▼aThe  conclusion  is  drawn  that  while  no  one  will  ever  be  able  to  ask  questions  as  Jesus  did,  an  effective  model  for  communicating  biblical  truth  will  utilize  Jesus'  emphasis  on  inward  change  in  His  use  of  questions.
