요약 : The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) poses an increasing threat to populations worldwide, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.

요약 : The dissertation consists of three manuscripts and a review of the literature. The literature review examines peer education and youth networks as they relate to HIV risk-taking behaviors. In the first manuscript, evaluating the social networks of peer educators allows a better understanding of the process of peer education in terms of (a) defining the composition of peer contacts, (b) identifying the social norms that play lay a critical role in youth decision-making, and (c) observing the range of messages and services transmitted during peer education. In general, peer educators tend to reach people who are like themselves in terms of age, sex, education, marital status, religion and ethnicity. Not all peer contacts “matched” the demographic characteristics of the peer educator counseling them, but there is a clear pattern.

요약 : The second manuscript explores the link between exposure to reproductive health information and behavior. The study compares behavioral outcomes from those who talked to no one about reproductive health and those who spoke to peers, adults, or both peers and adults. The results indicate that youth who talked with peers were 1.71 times more likely than youth who talked to no one to have done something to protect themselves from AIDS. Further, those who talked to both peers and adults were 2.08 times more likely to have done something to protect them. Specific AIDS-related behaviors are discussed.

요약 : The third and final manuscript examines the relationship between peer promoters and their contacts, and how this may affect the behavior change process. Greater similarity between peer promoters and their contacts is associated with greater likelihood that the contacts will take some action to protect themselves from AIDS. The data provide insight into the process of peer education counseling for HIV risk reduction.
초록/해제
요약 : The results demonstrate the advantages of using a network approach in the analysis of peer promotion activities, particularly for examining the social context of adolescent and young adult reproductive health decision-making. The findings are discussed in terms of their possible implications for program managers, researchers, and policymakers. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
