■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  study  was  to  investigate  how  family  preservation  participants  perceived  family  functioning.  The  study  investigated  in  depth  how  eight  participating  families  described  their  perceptions  of  ideal  functioning  using  their  own  words.  These  perceptions  were  compared  to  how  The  Family  Assessment  Form  (FAF),  a  widely  respected  family  assessment  tool,  measured  the  families'  functioning.  The  study  also  focused  on  how  the  families  perceived  the  family  preservation  intervention  and  whether  a  mutual  working  relationship  existed.  Cultural  consensus  analysis  and  multidimensional  scaling  techniques  were  used  to  analyze  the  parents'  data  concerning  family  functioning.  The  families  shared  a  concept  of  how  a  family  ideally  functions,  and  it  differed  from  the  family  preservation  practitioners'  perceptions.  The  families'  descriptions  of  functioning  were  similar  to  the  normative  components  of  functioning  measured  by  the  FAF.  The  practitioners'  perceptions  of  the  families'  functioning  were  different  than  what  the  families  perceived  to  be  ideal.  The  FAF  was  found  to  be  a  useful  assessment  tool  in  this  family  preservation  program.  Despite  the  perceptual  differences,  the  families  perceived  that  mutuality  existed  within  their  working  relationships  with  practitioners.  The  study  lends  support  to  the  practice  of  using  the  FAF  in  order  to  expedite  meaningful  assessments.  The  FAF  was  successfully  modified  in  this  study,  suggesting  that  it  is  adaptable  in  different  applications.  Mutuality  in  the  working  relationship  was  not  only  an  integral  part  of  the  services,  but  it  also  was  related  to  families'  perceptions  of  almost  all  services.
