■520    ▼aTimes  are  changing,  but  will  the  church  change  to  meet  the  needs  of  its  time?  What  “worked”  in  church  leadership  fifty  years  ago,  even  twenty-five  years  ago  is  not  as  effective  today.  It  certainly  will  be  even  less  effective  in  another  twenty  years.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  develops  a  model  for  effective  pastoral  leadership  in  mainline  churches  during  changing  times.  It  draws  upon  and  integrates  three  disciplines:  theology,  family  systems  psychology  and  leadership  philosophy  theories.  In  combining  these  three  disciplines,  the  goal  of  this  paper  is  to  offer  a  model  for  pastors  to  apply  in  the  context  of  ministry  as  they  strive  to  be  effective  in  their  callings  in  the  Lord.
■520    ▼aThe  paper  is  divided  into  seven  chapters.  The  first  and  second  chapters  deal  with  the  reality  and  nature  of  change.  We  will  discuss  the  typical  human  responses  to  change  and  the  multi-faceted  influences  of  change  within  our  culture.  Also,  we  will  look  at  the  nature  of  change  and  how  that  nature  affects  the  church.
■520    ▼aThe  third  and  fourth  chapters  introduce  the  reader  to  the  idea  that  there  is  a  difference  between  effective  and  efficient  leadership.  The  primary  difference  is  the  effective  pastoral  leadership  is  efficiency  (getting  the  task  accomplished)  plus  the  pastoral  sensitivity  in  personal  relationships.  During  these  chapters  the  reader  will  be  introduced  to  the  concept  of  the  “self”  and  how  a  healthy  self  affects  one's  ability  to  be  effective.
■520    ▼aThe  fifth  and  sixth  chapters  present  a  biblical  model  for  effective  pastoral  leadership  that  is  effective,  not  just  efficient.  In  this  chapter  we  begin  to  pull  the  disciplines  together  to  create  a  model  for  effective  leadership.  Then,  we  will  look  at  case  studies,  applying  the  model  for  effective  pastoral  leadership,  and  discuss  if  the  pastors  in  the  case  studies  were  effective.  If  they  were  not,  how  could  they  have  been?
■520    ▼aThe  seventh  and  last  chapter  presents  five  starting  points  toward  an  effective  leadership  style.  We  will  look  at  some  of  the  practical  application  of  the  effective  pastoral  leadership  model  and  how  the  average  pastor  can  start  to  implement  it  in  his  or  her  life  and  ministry.
