■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  provide  the  preaching  community  with  a  critical  evaluation  of  Jesse  James  Northcutt's  homiletical  design.  This  purpose  is  fulfilled  through  historical  analysis,  interpretive  judgment,  and  contemporary  application  related  to  Northcutt's  life  and  character,  his  theory  of  preaching,  his  practice  of  preaching,  his  pedagogy  for  teaching  preaching,  and  his  contributions  to  preaching  in  the  twentieth  century.  The  criteria  used  for  evaluating  Northcutt's  homiletical  design  is  Augustine's  instruction  to  preachers  as  exemplified  in  italicDe  Doctrina  Christiana  /italic.  The  sources  utilized  include  primary  and  secondary  sources  in  the  form  of  books,  articles,  personal  memoirs,  correspondence,  church  bulletins  and  minutes,  sermon  samples,  class  notes,  and  interviews  with  individuals  who  had  recollection  of  Northcutt's  life  and  ministry.
■520    ▼aChapter  1  establishes  the  direction  and  boundaries  of  the  research.  Chapter  2  displays  Northcutt's  personal  and  professional  development  in  comparison  to  Augustine's  characterization  of  a  good  preacher.  Chapter  3  compares  Northcutt's  ideas  about  preaching  to  critical  features  of  homiletics  promoted  by  Augustine.  Chapter  4  highlights  Northcutt's  pattern  of  preaching  in  relation  to  suggested  practices  from  Augustine's  instruction.  Chapter  5  represents  Northcutt's  customs  in  educating  a  person  about  preaching  in  relation  to  Augustine's  pedagogical  recommendations.  Chapter  6  acknowledges  the  benefits  of  Northcutt's  life  and  ministry  within  the  parameters  of  his  immediate  context  and  his  own  denomination.  Chapter  7  provides  a  brief  evaluation  of  Northcutt's  contributions  to  the  larger  field  of  homiletics.  Chapter  8,  the  final  chapter,  contains  a  summary  of  the  entire  study  and  conclusions  about  Jesse  Northcutt's  homiletical  design.
■520    ▼aThree  principle  conclusions  are  reached  based  on  discoveries  in  this  research.  First,  Northcutt's  homiletical  design  complies  with  the  basic  contours  of  classical  homiletics  as  represented  by  Augustine  in  italicDe  Doctrina  Christiana/italic,  though  certain  variances  and  degrees  of  emphasis  exist.  Second,  Northcutt's  homiletical  design  provides  a  twentieth-century  Southern  Baptist  watershed  mark  for  representing  biblical  preaching  in  accordance  with  the  attributes  of  classical  homiletics  as  initiated  by  Augustine.  Third,  Northcutt's  homiletical  design  represents  the  contextualization  of  classical  homiletics  in  the  twentieth  century  and  validates  how  the  rudimentary  elements  of  classical  homiletics  can  be  perpetuated  in  forming  contemporary  homiletical  designs.
