요약 : ?Pub Inc In the current context where progressive religious leadership has become invisible in the public arena, where the voice of the Religious Right is the one most frequently heard, and where pluralism presents new challenges and opportunities, this study explores the potential role of progressive religious leaders in the public arena to raise questions of value and meaning, lead debate, and help shape society.
초록/해제
요약 : A phenomenological study using qualitative interviews, a demographic survey, and document analysis were conducted with 20 women leaders who seemed to be exercising public religious leadership. They were social entrepreneurs who founded organizations or shaped existing ones, and who seemed to be religiously or spiritually motivated. Their work touched a range of social issues—poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, women's and children's rights, the death penalty, urban dislocation, and violence against women, among others.
초록/해제
요약 : The study explored the nature of the respondents' work and their understandings of their roles as leaders and religious leaders; their use of religious language; the factors that shaped and formed them to do this kind of work, such as families of origin, exposures to suffering, and early religious messages, key relationships, and historical eras; and finally, the connections between their religious beliefs and their public commitments.
초록/해제
요약 : Many patterns surfaced that characterize this type of women's leadership. Under the rubric of “seamlessness,” the study describes a quality of living their lives in a holistic, coherent way that overcame the compartmentalization of our culture into sacred/secular, public/private realms. A pattern of operating called “the one-on-one/systemic dance” or a feminist ethic of connection described the ways in which the leaders maintained involvement with individual clients, even as they worked at the macro level on systemic policy strategies. For many, their religious beliefs provided a resource, support, and vision of a just society, motivating them to work on behalf of those our society often leaves behind.
초록/해제
요약 : The study is aimed at an audience interested in public, women's, and religious leadership, and the combination of these; the public practice of ethics; and the connection of religious values to professional practice.
