요약 : The literature in congregational studies urges pastors entering new congregations to engage in a congregational study as a prerequisite for effective ministry. Using field research methodology, this research chronicles the stories of seven pastors as they attempt to learn about their new congregations. The research has two primary goals. The first aim is to add a voice from the workplace, that is, a ground level perspective on congregational studies. The pastoral portraits comprise the bulk of the dissertation.

요약 : Several common themes emerge from the accounts: (1)A purpose beyond analysis: In addition to learning about a congregation, a congregational study is often a means to a particular end, such as the development of a vision statement. Additionally, the process of the study itself can become a tool for ministry. (2)Caution: The stories of several pastors suggest that inadequate study selection and implementation could diminish its usefulness or become a source for minister consternation. (3)Responding to results: The response to a congregational study is not necessarily an obvious or simple task but may have important consequences to both pastor and congregation.

요약 : The second research goal is to offer a model for theological research which is both scholarly and transformational. While qualitative method has become a standard option for research in the human sciences, theological academia has been slow to embrace it. This study suggests field research can be an exercise in practical theology, grounded in human experience, brought into dialogue with Faith. The final analytical chapter draws from Edward Farley's deep symbolsas an interpretive frame for situational hermeneutics. Several pastoral situations related to congregational studies are examined from the perspective of Obligation,Tradition, and Hope.
초록/해제
요약 : Beyond its scholarly merit, engaging in field research from a theological perspective offers moments of theophany. Both participants and researcher experience Surprises from God as they seek to reflect and become more intentional about responding to situations. Finally, the interaction of the reader with story continues the opportunities for spiritual growth. This is the hope of the researcher.
