요약 : This dissertation analyzes Alister McGrath's theory of doctrinal development, paying special attention to how his view marks an important advance over other evangelical theories of doctrinal development. Using the views of B. B. Warfield and James Orr on doctrinal development, chapter one highlights the questions that the problem of doctrinal development poses for evangelical theology. In chapter two McGrath's view of doctrinal development is explicated by bringing it into critical dialogue with the competing theories of Carl F. H. Henry and George Lindbeck. Here McGrath's theory attempts a italicvia media/italic between Henry's propositionalism and Lindbeck's cultural-linguistic system. Chapter three discusses McGrath's view of tradition as a resource for doctrinal development by analyzing his use of the thought of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Alasdair MacIntyre. This chapter reveals that McGrath use of tradition and his view of the function of doctrine comprise two poles around which he seeks to maintain theological unity and continuity in the face of doctrinal change. His view of the development of the doctrine of justification serves as an illustration of the interplay between doctrine and tradition. Chapter four claims that McGrath's theory of doctrinal development marks an advance over previous evangelical theories. By comparing how McGrath's theory accounts for the development of the doctrine of justification with other evangelical accounts, I suggest that McGrath's approach constitutes a significant shift for evangelicals on this issue. Also in chapter four, I criticize McGrath's theory by arguing that it reveals an inconsistent commitment to historicism and harbors an underlying fideism. Although these deficiencies create ambiguities in McGrath's theory of development, I seek to overcome them by reconfiguring his theory in a direction suggested by the work of J. Wentzel van Huyssteen on the nature of rationality. By way of conclusion, I argue that McGrath's view marks a significant moment in the development of the evangelical historical consciousness. Evangelicals might usefully appropriate McGrath's insights regarding the priority of community for doctrinal development, the nature of truth claims, his view of the authority of texts, and his critical use of contemporary theories of tradition and interpretation for doing theology.
