■520    ▼aThe  subject  of  this  thesis  is  the  meaning  of  the  quote  &  Emacr;li  Ēli  lema  sabachthani,  in  light  of  the  quotes  source,  Ps  22:2a,  taken  in  context  of  Psalm  22  as  a  whole.  The  phrase,  Ēli  Ēli  lema  sabachthani  has  been  interpreted  in  the  context  of  the  passion  without  the  context  of  Ps  22:2a,  while  Ēli  Ēli  lema  sabachthani    seems  to  be  a  quote  of  Ps  22:2a.  When  a  quote  is  used  from  a  passage,  it  brings  with  it  a  certain  meaning  that  in  certain  situations  should  be  factored  into  the  interpretation  of  the  passage.  This  thesis  will  seek  to  provide  an  evaluation  of  the  different  possible  linguistic  relationships  between  the  Greek  transliteration  Ēli  Ēli  lema  sabachthani  given  in  Matt  27:46  and  Mark  15:34  and  the  Hebrew  of  Ps  22:2a.  The  thesis  will  seek  to  establish  the  criteria  by  which  we  can  determine  if  Ēli  Ēli  lema  sabachthani  is  a  quote  of  Ps  22:2a.  This  thesis  will  exegetically  evaluate  the  meaning  of  Ps  22:2a  in  the  context  of  Psalm  22.  The  thesis  will  apply  the  evaluated  meaning  of  Ps  22:2a  to  the  meaning  of  Ēli  Ēli  lema  sabachthani  as  found  in  Matt  22:46  and  Mark  15:34.
