초록/해제
요약 : This study is a literary analysis of the portrayal of Peter in the Fourth Gospel, with special attention being paid to the effects that the dynamic and lifelike character of Peter has upon readers.

요약 : The first phase of this study provides the methods for analyzing character development and reader empathy in the study of characters and characterization in the New Testament narrative. John Darr's model for interpreting characters has been adopted as the baseline for this study. After the basic features of his method are summarized, the second chapter discusses the needs and the method for the analysis of character development. It argues that there are varieties of characters in the New Testament. The study of developing characters is very important because these characters attract more attention and elicit stronger responses from the reader than do other types of characters. An analysis of a developing character should include a study of the what as well as the how of the changes of the character. The third chapter completes the methodology phase by discussing in detail the reader's identification and empathy with characters during the dynamic process of reading. It points out that most readers tend to identify and empathize with good, major, round, and developing characters who are similar to them. While most readers develop an admiring identification and idealistic empathy with the positive or idealized characters, they maintain an even greater identification and more realistic empathy with the round and developing characters.

요약 : The second phase of this study is a detailed analysis of Peter in the Fourth Gospel. In the fourth and fifth chapters, each reference of Peter is examined carefully in accordance with the narrative's sequence, paying special attention to the character portrayal of Peter through his actions, words, and relationships with other characters, his character development, and the reader's identification and empathy with him during the course of reading. The final chapter summarizes the characterization of Peter, his development, and the reader's empathy with him from a post-reading perspective. It conclude that the Beloved Disciple and Judas are the boundary characters who occupy the positive and the negative ends of dramatis personae. The disciples, on the other hand, serve as flanker characters who rise and fall with the dynamic Peter. Through empathic identification with Peter, the reader is able to experience not only the text at the intellectual level but also the joy and the difficulties in following Jesus. The reader is able to learn more about his or her own self and his or her own faith in Jesus.
