요약 : This dissertation explores the Jewish background of Christian worship. The research was directed at describing two contexts: the synagogue, which was one of the most influential Jewish institutions in the first century; and the Jerusalem church, which was the earliest Christian community. The author argues that these two contexts supply the most significant data on the question of the issue explored here. As the nature of worship of each community is examined, certain Jewish roots of Christian worship are identified and, at the same time, Christian characteristics, or departures from the synagogue, are pointed out.

요약 : As a key element of the Jewish roots of Christian worship, berakah, the ground and nuclear of Jewish liturgy, is treated as the most influential factor in the early Christian worship, especially as seen in the Lord's Supper. The study also argues that Christian baptism is deeply connected with Jewish antecedents of baptism; it has the meaning of cleansing as with the ritual ablutions in the Old Testament, the meaning of eschatological asceticism as in Qumran purification rites, the meaning of entering membership as in Jewish proselyte baptism, and the meaning of repentance and eschatological preparedness as in the baptism of John. The Tefillah, the Kadish, and Scripture reading and homily are described in relation to other Jewish influences seen in the worship of the Jerusalem church.

요약 : Distinctive elements of the Christian worship, which set it apart from, and perhaps in tension with, the synagogue of that day are also observed. The Lord's Supper is seen as taking on new meanings and interpretations of the old Passover. The most fascinating characteristic of the early prayer is that it was offered in the name of Jesus. Furthermore, the study mentions confessional and intercessory types of prayer as characteristically Christian, arguing that Jewish prayers rarely included such expressions. Early Christian baptism was performed in the name of Jesus and was deeply related to the bestowal of the Holy Spirit. The concepts of the Holy Spirit as empowering, anointing, abiding in, fulfilling, granting spiritual gifts, and so on were not part of the synagogue worship. Of further significance, the study notes, the words of God were proclaimed before the reception of the Holy Spirit and baptism with water.

요약 : This comparative study of worship provides valuable insights and ideas for the study of the origins of Christian worship and the origins of Christianity as well.
