요약 : Jealousy is the ardent desire to maintain exclusive relational faithfulness from a person in the face of a challenge to that faithfulness. Jealousy, in distinction to envy, and zeal, always carries with it a relational element in which the one who is jealous desires exclusive favor in the relationship. That God is a jealous God is a clear teaching of the Bible. The idea this study seeks to show is that God is intensely jealous for his own glory, and the faithfulness of his people, and godly persons share this emotion as well. Repeatedly throughout the Bible God reminds his people that he is a jealous God. His jealousy is for his own honor, and for those with whom he has established a covenant relationship. Any violation of this exclusive devotion in the relationship is met with a strong emotional response of jealousy, which results in wrathful and restorative action. In the Bible we also see godly jealousy demonstrated by humans. This jealousy is directed to either God, or other humans. Human jealousy is seldom uncontaminated with sin, can be unwarranted, and taken to ungodly extremes. Because of this, it tends to only be understood as a negative emotion in society and the church. Nevertheless, there is an important place in the Bible for a human jealousy that is righteous and godly.

요약 : While God's jealousy is not the main focus of this work, it is obvious that an accurate understanding of divine jealousy must first be understood before godly human jealousy can be. Therefore, the nature of the jealousy of God is established in chapters 2 and 3 before human jealousy is investigated. Chapters 4 and 5 study the lives of five men in Scripture who embodied godly human jealousy: Phinehas, David, Elijah, Jesus, and Paul.
