■520    ▼aThis  study  examines  the  role  that  the  Old  Testament  covenants  played  in  Paul's  law  passages  in  Galatians  and  Romans.  After  his  conversion  Paul  began  to  preach  the  Gospel  of  Jesus  Christ,  declaring  that  a  person  was  saved  apart  from  the  works  of  the  law.  This  stirred  up  opposition  from  the  Jewish  community  and  others  and  forced  Paul  to  defend  his  "law-free"  Gospel.  Paul  drew  carefully  formulated  arguments  in  Galatians  and  Romans  for  the  defense  of  his  Gospel  from  the  Old  Testament  covenants,  mainly  the  Abrahamic  and  Sinaitic  covenants.  The  consistency  with  which  Paul  presented  these  arguments  over  the  years  showed  that  Paul  had  a  system  or  paradigm  of  covenant  from  which  he  operated.
■520    ▼aFollowing  the  introduction,  chapter  2  examines  covenants  in  the  Old  Testament  to  determine  their  nature  and  relationships.  The  major  emphasis  centers  on  the  Abrahamic  and  Sinaitic  covenants.  The  findings  of  this  chapter  emphasize  both  their  historical  as  well  as  their  theological  nature.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  presents  the  evidence  for  Covenantal  Nomism  in  Paul's  day.  E.  P.  Sanders's  work  is  critiqued  as  well  as  that  of  James  D.  G.  Dunn.  Included  in  this  chapter  is  also  an  examination  of  the  intertestamental  literature  which  provided  enough  information  to  discern  how  the  Jews  viewed  the  covenant  relationship.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  uses  the  covenant  relationships  determined  in  chapter  2  as  a  means  of  interpreting  Paul's  law  passages  in  Galatians.  The  covenant  approach  to  Galatians  provides  insight  into  some  of  the  difficult  issues  of  the  book.
■520    ▼aChapter  5  illustrates  that  Paul  used  the  same  basic  argument  in  Romans  as  he  did  in  Galatians.  The  same  covenant  relationships  are  present  especially  in  the  earlier  chapters.  Due  to  the  distinct  occasion  of  the  Roman  letter,  differences  do  exist  in  Romans  that  were  not  found  in  Galatians.  The  major  difference  is  Paul's  expanded  use  of  law  to  include  the  Gentiles.
