■520    ▼aThe  dissertation  compares  the  treatments  of  sacred  places,  objects,  and  persons  in  the  1917  and  1983  codes  of  canon  law.  It  shows  how  one  use  of  the  term  “sacred”  in  the  code  refers  to  a  juridical  status  conferred  upon  places,  objects,  and  persons  by  ecclesiastical  authority  using  a  liturgical  rite.  For  some  persons  this  is  done  through  a  sacrament  (e.g.  sacred  orders),  while  for  other  persons  and  for  places  and  objects  it  is  done  through  a  sacramental  which  the  former  code  referred  to  as  a  constitutive  blessing(e.g.  religious  profession,  consecration,  blessing,  etc.).  The  term  constitutive  blessing  is  not  used  in  the  1983  code,  but  this  dissertation  shows  that  it  still  exists  as  an  institute.  Moreover,  it  shows  that  both  the  essential  elements  of  constitutive  blessings  and  the  Church's  understanding  of  juridical  sacred  status  are  based  on  Roman  law  and  not  on  biblical  models.  Another  conclusion  is  that  sacred  status  is  essentially  tied  to  a  function  connected  to  the  Church's  sanctifying  office.  Finally,  the  traditional  understanding  of  what  it  means  to  be  a  "sacred  person"  in  the  Church  has  changed  based  on  the  recognition  of  the  fundamental  equality  of  all  the  faithful  based  on  baptism  and  the  existence  of  properly  lay  ministries  which  meet  the  standards  for  juridical  sacred  status.
