요약 : African American male alienation in the church poses both a serious problem and significant challenge to ministry in the black church. The relative paucity of African American males in the church is part of a pattern of inactivity in the major institutions that have socialized and sustained African American people. Thus, their alienation from the church invariably imposes negative consequences for gender and familial relationships. Also, if African American men are not active in congregational life, this affects the number and quality of persons who will eventually occupy leadership positions in the church. In addition, the black churches historical role of nurturing and producing viable national leadership is seriously threatened by this dilemma.

요약 : This study employed focus group methodology to determine the reasons why forty-six men left an African American Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan. The discussions focused on the men's perceptions, assumptions, and understandings related to their experience of church. Moreover, this project utilizes David W. Augsburger's notion of interpathy as a theoretical framework for both the interview process and the interpretive analysis. Augsburger's interpathic method is a corrective to the tendency in theology and psychology to conceive of the individual in an acultural, ahistorical, and apolitical sense. The study, then, seeks to understand the epistemic world of African American men in both insight and feeling without devaluing their experiences.

요약 : In addition, this study contributes to the work of Jawanza Kunjufu and Larry L. Macon on African American men and the church by discovering that the men's decision to leave the church centered around some cognitive crisis which eventuated into institutional alienation. The crises centered around six issues: "The Crisis of Belief" "The Crisis of Ethical Congruence" "The Crisis of Institutional Irrelevance" "The Crisis of Race and Religion" "The Crisis of the Search for Community" and, "The Crisis of Generational Conflict." Finally, it offers possible implications for ecclesiological practices and a strengthened ministry to African American men.
