요약 : This dissertation considers the methodology and theology of the Russian Orthodox liturgical theologian Alexander Schmemann (1921-1983). Schmemann considered the rift between the Church's worship and theology the downfall not only of theology, but of the Church itself. In response to this situation, he formulated a definition of liturgical theology that would allow an address to this break of liturgy and theology while also providing a methodology suited for liturgical theology as a specific and precise theological approach. This was accomplished in at least two ways: (1)by returning to the patristic methodology of studying the liturgy as a primary source of theology; (2)by concentrating the doctrine of the Church in the eucharistic celebration.

요약 : Based on the conviction that Schmemannian theological method cannot be understood apart from the watershed that Afanas'ev's ecclesiological project—the notion that the celebration of the Eucharist gives rise to the Church—brought within and without the Orthodox world, a brief overview of Afanas'evian thought and the world of the Russian émigre community in Paris sets the theological and historic backdrop for this essay.

요약 : Afanas'evian eucharistic ecclesiology offered Schmemann the foundation from which to develop his methodology, a liturgical theology focused on the corporate eucharistic experience of the Triune God. However, too much has been made of Schmemann's eucharistiamonism which is countered in this dissertation by investigating the role of Baptism in order to show that his is a Paschal ecclesiology. The centerpiece of the essay is an indepth analysis of Schmemann's eucharistic theology which considers the Sacrament as the ecclesial ascent to the Kingdom of God by which the Church is manifested. The eucharistic ascension of the worshipping assembly is then considered in light of its cosmological, ecclesiological and eschatological dimensions.

요약 : From this analysis, a critique of Schmemann's methodology is offered from a Reformed Christian perspective. This critical reflection leads to the final chapter which proposes beneficial links between the theology of the sixteenth century Reformer, John Calvin, and Schmemann. The conclusion of this thesis lays a modest groundwork, for Schmemannian thought to inform the development of a Reformed liturgical theology centered around the Lord's Supper.
