■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  a  comparative  analysis  of  a  congregation's  and  a  pastor's  perception  of  ministerial  leadership.  Chapter  1  presents  the  research  concern  of  skills  essential  for  a  competent  minister.  The  New  Testament  model  of  The  Good  Shepherd  is  presented  as  the  biblical  model.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  begins  with  a  review  of  a  theology  of  the  practice  of  ministry.  The  Old  Testament  models  of  leadership,  priest,  and  prophet  are  discussed.  The  New  Testament  models  of  ministry  begin  by  detailing  the  biblical  terms  for  the  pastoral  office,  the  pastor's  calling,  character,  and  competencies.  This  chapter  ends  with  the  secular  search  for  leadership  models.  Situational  leadership  is  detailed  as  a  efficient  model  to  be  used  in  the  development  of  cognitive,  affective,  and  behavioral  leadership  characteristics.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  is  a  descriptive  survey  studying  the  relationships  between  the  perceptions  of  laypersons  and  pastors  of  specific  congregations.  A  list  of  fifteen  leadership  characteristics  was  compiled  using  an  expert  panel.  A  survey  instrument  was  then  developed  from  these  fifteen  ministerial  leadership  characteristics.  Southern  Baptist  pastors  related  to  Mid-Continent  College,  Mayfield,  Kentucky,  were  mailed  the  survey  instrument.
■520    ▼aThree  churches  in  each  of  the  three  states  involved  in  the  study  were  selected  according  to  size,  and  five  laypersons  of  various  ages  were  then  chosen  to  participate  in  this  study.  The  procedures  of  developing  the  instrument,  choosing  the  pastors  and  churches  involved  in  the  study  are  detailed  in  this  chapter.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  seeks  to  display  and  discuss  data  in  an  objective  manner.  Data  were  compiled  and  tables  used  to  display  rank  and  mean  scores  using  the  computer  program  Excel.  Five  research  questions  were  used  to  explore  and  analyze  data  obtained  from  the  survey  instruments.  The  correlation  coefficient,  Person  (r)  was  utilized  to  examine  relationships  within  pastors  and  laypersons  and  between  both  groups.
■520    ▼aChapter  5  presents  concluding  remarks  concerning  the  relationship  between  a  congregations  and  pastors  perception  as  to  ministerial  leadership.  The  research  demonstrated  that  a  corporate  culture  exists  within  the  region  of  Western  Kentucky,  Southern  Illinois,  and  Northwestern  Tennessee.  The  rank,  mean  scores,  and  correlation  coefficient,  Pearson  (r)  demonstrated  no  significant  difference  between  pastors  and  laypersons  perceptions.  The  significance  of  this  corporate  culture  is  discussed  in  this  section.  Recommendations  were  made  concerning  the  need  to  train  ministerial  leaders  using  a  competency-based  curriculum.  A  review  of  the  value  of  learning  clusters  to  developing  lifelong  learners  was  included.  The  need  to  train  laypersons  serving  on  pastor  search  committees  and  other  significant  lay  leaders  was  demonstrated  by  data  analysis.
