- 요약 : This dissertation is a narrative critical study of the witnesses in the Book of Acts. It investigates how the implied readers are meant to understand the Jesus-witnesses in the story world of Acts, by examining how the omniscient narrator presents the witnesses to them. The thesis of this dissertation is that Luke uses literary techniques familiar to his readers to affirm the witness as true and his message as truth. The names of the witnesses change as the story progresses from Jerusalem to Rome, but the narrator uses the same kinds of literary techniques to demonstrate affirmation for the witnesses throughout the story.

- 요약 : Two books Laid the foundation for studying narrative techniques familiar to Luke's time, which could be used in telling the witnesses' stories: David E. Aune's, The New Testament in Its Literary Environment, and Robert L. Brawley's, Luke-Acts and the Jews: Conflict, Apology, and Conciliation. In addition, Dieter Georgi's, The Opponents of Paul in Second Corinthians, provided assistance in understanding the Hellenistic environment of the missionary work of Jews and Christians in the first century. Many excellent monographs on the individual witnesses in Acts proved helpful in guiding the more holistic approach of this dissertation.
- 초록/해제
- 요약 : Four narrative techniques were examined: (1)appealing personal qualities, (2)prophecy and adherence to ancient tradition, (3)divine approval, and (4)divine plan. Acts was first read to discover the narrator's use of these techniques; then, the Gospel of Luke, the Old Testament, other Jewish writings, and Greco-Roman literature were studied. The focus of the investigation was on the impact the use of these techniques would have on how implied readers viewed the figures to whom these techniques were applied.
- 초록/해제
- 요약 : After examination of these literary techniques as applied to the witnesses in Acts, it was determined that the narrator affirmed the witness as true and his message as truth. The persona of the witness is an archetypal figure in Acts, whose story is told with theology in mind. The witness presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the words and deeds of God recounted in Israel's story and as the Savior of the world.
