요약 : The varied literary and rhetorical backgrounds of paraenetic literature make exegesis and theological interpretation of New Testament paraenesis a difficult task. The diversity and apparent unrelated character of individual exhortations in paraenetic materials exacerbate the problem. This dissertation attempts to fill the lacunae in previous relevant research by providing a syntheses of extant research, identifying individual paraeneses by form and content, and developing and validating an eclectic analytical paradigm for identification, exegesis, and theological interpretation of paraenetic materials in the NT.

요약 : Chapter one surveys major contributions to the formation of an exegetical paradigm for paraenetic materials. Contributions group together according to critical approaches and fields of study, namely, semantics and linguistics, Religionsgeschichtliche Schule, literary and rhetorical criticism, Formgeschichte, structuralism, social-scientific criticism, and ethics. Complementary research undertaken for this dissertation supplements the work of the major contributors. Chapter one also outlines paraenetic subgenres and constituent forms derived through analysis of primary sources. Vice and virtue fists, domestic codes, duty codes, obligations lists, and implied paraeneses comprise the five paraenetic subgenres. Subgenre constituents constitute the more narrowly defined categories and applications of the five subgenres. Paraenetic subgenre constituents include paraeneses concerning general social obligations; inner community obligations; possessions and sexual ethics; self-subordination; paradigmatic conduct and responsible leadership; cultic activity; various groups within the congregation; abandonment of retaliation, recompense, opposition, and judicial dealings; watchfulness and sobriety; and charismata.

요약 : Chapters two and three deal with the crux of this investigation, namely, the proposal and validation of an exegetical paradigm for analysis of New Testament paraenetic passages. Chapter two structures the paradigm along the lines of the coherence-contingency scheme for theological interpretation proposed by the Pauline theology study group of the Society of Biblical Literature. In most cases, the social locations or situations of the addressees and the distinct content, literary motifs, and rhetorical devices present in writings define the various subgenres and subgenre constituents. Chapter three validates the exegetical paradigm by applying it to Heb 13:1–19. The results show that Heb 13:1–19 stands as a truly paraenetic passage, which employs the five subgenres of paraenesis and six of the ten subgenre constituents identified in this dissertation.
