요약 : The ethical relationship of the Christian community to the world is an enduring and often disturbing problem for the church. The purpose of this dissertation is to address the relationship of the church to the world by examining how Stanley Hauerwas, Lesslie Newbigin, and Richard Mouw employ the concept of truth in public ethics.
초록/해제
요약 : Primary sources for the study include the published works of Hauerwas, Newbigin, an Mouw. Each affirms that truth is indispensable for both apprehending and constituting the theological and ethical reality of the church. Employing a dialogical methodology, the distinct contributions of Hauerwas, Newbigin, and Mouw provide resources for a comprehensive Christian public ethic.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter One introduces the current ethos for thinking about the public ethic of the church-postmodernism. A prevailing ideologization of pluralism and the particularization of truth set the general research problem and establish the reasons why Hauerwas, Newbigin, and Mouw are chosen for this study.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter Two focuses on Hauerwas's conception of the church as the center of a Christian public ethic. The church, as a truthful community, is the only authentic Christian public ethic. Through truthful living informed by truthful polity, the church practices its public ethic.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter Three addresses Newbigin's understanding of the gospel as the center of the church's public ethic. The gospel, the truth about the world, places the church in critical relationship to prevailing cultures and summons the church to challenge all assumptions of authority that stand against the truth of the gospel.
초록/해제
요약 : Chapter Four examines Mouw's notion of true God as the center of the church's public ethic. A creating and revealing God provides true moral guidance for both the church and the world. The church acts as an agent of God's righteousness in the world.
초록/해제
요약 : The concluding chapter generates a comprehensive matrix for a Christian public ethic that includes resources gleaned from Hauerwas, Newbigin, and Mouw: truthful people, true gospel, and true God, respectively. Following Anthony Thiselton and others in arguing for the polymorphous character of truth, this study concludes that truth, theologically and biblically conceived, provides important resource for the church's conception of public ethics.
