■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  necessity  of  including  application  in  the  expository  sermon.  The  central  issue  is  not  how  the  preacher  is  to  apply  the  biblical  text  in  the  expository  sermon,  but  why  it  must  be  done.  Chapter  1  defines  application  in  preaching  as  primarily  demonstrating  relevancy  of  the  biblical  text  and  giving  practical  instruction  as  to  how  it  should  be  incorporated  into  one's  life.  Arguments  against  application  in  preaching  are  examined  and  a  theological  justification  for  application  in  the  expository  sermon  is  provided.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  is  an  overview  of  the  history  of  preaching  for  the  purpose  of  identifying  the  greatest  preachers  in  each  era  of  church  history  as  applicational  preachers  and  models  for  contemporary  expositors.  Included  is  a  biblical  justification  of  application  in  expository  preaching.

■520    ▼aThis  work  contends  that  the  reason  application  in  the  expository  sermon  is  not  given  proper  attention  is  that  an  overarching  rationale  for  its  inclusion  has  not  been  provided.  A  proper  theological,  biblical,  historical,  and  hermeneutical  understanding  of  its  importance  should  serve  as  a  catalyst  for  better  application  in  expository  preaching.
