요약 : This dissertation attempts to answer the question: what did Paul expect from the churches in regards to evangelistic activity? Chapter 1 shows that the traditional answer to this question (i.e., that Paul expected the church to engage actively in mission) has been increasingly challenged, and current responses to these challenges have been inadequate.

요약 : Chapter 2 seeks to find a theological basis for the church's mission in Paul's letters. While scholars have traditionally proposed the Great Commission or the Holy Spirit as the basis of Paul's ecclesiastical missionary expectations, we find these two bases lacking textual support in the Pauline epistles. Paul's description of the gospel as a dynamic power, however, seems to provide a theological basis for his expectation that the church would engage in mission. The gospel, as God's word, is “power” which inevitably progresses through the persons and communities included in its advance. Ultimately, Paul's confidence in the gospel to create churches which continue the apostolic mission is a confidence in the gospel's author and subject—God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

요약 : Chapter 3 provides confirmation of this theological construct in the apostle's explicit imperatives to evangelize (1 Cor 4:16; 11:1; Phil 2:16; Eph 6:15-17; cf. Phil 1:12 18). Likewise, the apostle's commands to passive missionary activity should not be neglected in attempting to form a holistic picture of Paul's ecclesiastical missionary expectations (e.g., Titus 2:1-10).

요약 : Chapter 4 offers further confirmation that Paul expected the gospel to propel the church in missionary activity that paralleled his own apostolic mission. Paul speaks of a continuity of activity between his apostolic mission and the church in a number of incidental areas: (1)divine confirmation of the gospel through miracles, (2)praying for missions and the church, (3)teaching, admonishing, and building up the church, and (4)suffering. This last area, suffering, is especially significant because it shows that the dynamic (and offensive) gospel was effectively progressing through the churches.

요약 : Chapter 5 provides a summary of the dissertation and briefly explores implications for the modern church.
