■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  explore  the  importance  of  hope  as  a  crucial  dynamic  in  the  successful  recovery  of  ex-offenders.  The  dissertation  will  utilize  several  contributions  from  the  understanding  of  personality  growth  defined  by  object  relations  theory  as  a  means  of  exploring  how  the  deep  implications  of  hope  are  realized  in  the  lives  of  ex-offenders.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  organized  into  five  chapters.  Chapter  one  introduces  the  research  by  providing  the  statement  of  purpose,  definitions  of  terms,  background  information,  research  methodology,  and  delimitations  of  this  research.  This  chapter  serves  as  an  introduction  to  this  dissertation.
■520    ▼aChapter  two  explores  the  effect  of  perception  on  individual  psychology.  The  implication  of  individual  reality  and  transformation  of  perception  are  presented  in  the  perspective  of  internalization.  Meissner's  work  on  the  issue  of  internalization  is  examined  in  this  chapter.  Lewin's  field  theory  is  examined  to  present  human  beings'  inter-relatedness  of  various  realities  which  are  interdependent  with  each  other  in  a  given  time  period.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  deals  with  understandings  of  hope  in  the  perspectives  of  psychological,  pastoral,  and  theological  orientation.  For  the  psychological  understanding  of  hope,  both  object  relations  theories  and  possible  selves  are  examined.  For  the  pastoral  understanding  of  hope,  two  leading  pastoral  thinkers'  reflections  are  examined.  Finally,  for  a  theological  understanding  of  hope,  a  biblical  exegesis  of  hope  will  be  presented.
■520    ▼aChapter  four  presents  issues  related  with  ex-offenders'  life  situation,  and  the  results  of  a  case  study  is  discussed.  A  clinical  implication  of  hope  in  a  practical  life  context  of  ex-offenders  is  suggested  in  this  chapter.
■520    ▼aChapter  five  presents  the  conclusion  with  suggestions  for  further  studies  on  this  issue  of  hope  as  an  invisible  reality  for  the  well-being  of  ex-offenders.
