■520    ▼aThis  is  an  exploratory  study  about  adults  who  joined  the  Roman  Catholic  Church  following  revisions  in  the  Rite  of  Christian  Initiation  of  Adults  in  1972  and  1988.  The  process  which  leads  to  the  reception  of  the  Sacraments  of  Initiation  (Baptism,  Confirmation,  first  Eucharist)  includes  instructions  in  Catholic  tradition  and  Scripture,  experiences  of  prayer  and  ritual  steps  marking  their  progress,  and  assistance  by  teachers,  sponsors  and  parish  community.
■520    ▼aThe  pattern  of  initiation  given  by  Arnold  van  Gennep  in  describing  three  phases  of  separation,  liminality  and  reincorporation  is  used  in  comparison  to  the  Roman  Catholic  rite  to  support  a  framework  for  the  Christian  initiation  process.  In  addition,  the  work  of  Victor  Turner  describes  one  important  aspect  of  bonding  during  the  process,  which  he  calls  communitas.  Scriptural  and  liturgical  perspectives  complete  the  framework  of  Christian  Initiation.
■520    ▼aInterviews  were  conducted  with  eight  white,  middle-class  women  who  experienced  the  initiation  process  between  the  ages  of  thirty-two  and  fifty  years.  Three  phases  of  their  process  are  reviewed:  life  prior  to  seeking  initiation,  discoveries  during  the  process,  and  what  happened  to  their  lives  as  a  result  of  the  process.
■520    ▼aEvaluation  is  made  in  terms  of  participation  in  Church  and  community  rituals,  prayers  and  sacraments.  Individual  initiative  is  measured  by  growth  in  creating  personal  spiritual  support,  the  gathering  of  a  support  community  and  their  acts  of  charity  and  outreach  that  mark  a  life  of  sharing  the  life,  death  and  resurrection  of  Jesus  Christ  in  the  larger  world.
