요약 : This study argues that the rhetorical unit of 2 Corinthians 3:1-4:6 belongs to the genre of epideictic oratory. The encomiastic proof of 2 Cor 3:1–4:6 magnifies and lauds Paul's new covenant ministry of the Spirit and functions as an implicit appeal to the Corinthians for a complete reconciliation to the Pauline apostolate. Previous scholarly treatments of 2 Cor 3:1-4:6 have focused on: (1)its unique exegetical and theological features; (2)its historical dimensions; and (3)Paul's appropriation and hermeneutical application of Israel's Scriptures. Through the employment of George A. Kennedy's rhetorically informed methodology, this study will delineate the rhetorical dimensions of 2 Cor 3:1-4:6 and thus demonstrate the inadequacies of previous scholarly treatments. Chapter one explores the rhetorical unit and situation of 2 Corinthians. 2 Corinthians 3:1-4:6 must be interpreted within the discrete unit of 2 Corinthians 1-9 (written prior to 2 Corinthians 10-13). While Paul faced numerous exigencies when he wrote 2 Corinthians 1-9 (cancelled visit, Painful Letter, the issue of the offender, and the collection project), the one controlling exigence was his strained relationship with the Corinthians.

요약 : Chapter two examines the rhetorical species and stasis of 2 Corinthians 1–9. The preponderance of three features in 2 Corinthians 1-9—concern for the future, appeal to advantage, and proof by example—indicate that its species is deliberative oratory. The rhetorical stasis of 2 Corinthians 1-9 is one of quality and is concerned with Paul's competency for the apostolic ministry.

요약 : Chapter three sets forth a rhetorical analysis of 2 Corinthians 1-9 from the standpoint of invention, arrangement, and style. The rhetorical structure of 2 Corinthians 1–9 is delineated according to the speech parts of classical oratory.

요약 : Chapter four demonstrates in detail the epideictic qualities of 2 Cor 3:1-4:6. This eulogistic proof engages all of the significant topoi of an encomium and is structured formally with the topos of synkrisis(comparison). The unit panegyrizes Paul's credentials, competency, comportment, and new covenant ministry of the Spirit.
초록/해제
요약 : Further studies must recognize 2 Cor 3:1-4:6 is not part of an apologia of Paul directed toward his opponents, but an encomiastic proof that lauds his ministry, and that contributes significantly to his larger deliberative purpose of inviting the Corinthians fully and affectionately to embrace his apostleship as a basis for the appeal of the collection.
