요약 : Two recent trends in biblical scholarship have had much to say about Mary, the mother of Jesus. While ecumenical and feminist biblical scholarship have made significant contributions to the study of Mary in Scripture, it is also the case that the portraits of Mary which emerge out of these two movements are strikingly distinct from one another. In particular, while ecumenists embrace the portrait of Mary as the first and ideal disciple, feminists are reluctant to find such a portrait as central to the biblical witness, claiming that this portrait subordinates Mary to her son and serves to give Mary (and thus, all women) a subordinate role in the history of salvation and in the life of the church.

요약 : The purpose of the study is to compare and contrast ecumenical and feminist interpretations of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The Lukan image of "servant" provides fertile ground for the study of ecumenical and feminist portraits of Mary in Scripture. The study follows a history-of-interpretations approach: Chapter One explores the study of Mary from the starting point of the Second Vatican Council; Chapter Two studies the impact of the Mary in the New Testament document for Marian studies; Chapter Three provides feminist critique of the ecumenical contribution to the study of Mary; Chapter Four envisions biblical and theological possibilities for a treatment of Mary which is sensitive to both ecumenical and feminist concerns. As a final movement, the study uses insights from three specific areas: liberation theology, socio-historical study of Greco-Roman society in the first century, and studies of submission from the spiritual disciplines, to image the Mary, the mother of Jesus, in a helpful way to feminist and ecumenists alike.
