요약 : This study focuses on the Baptist General Convention of Texas to understand why race-conscience church leaders failed to pull their congregations toward racial integration during the American civil rights movement. Beginning in 1948, Texas Baptist leaders formulated and introduced what they believed to be a socially progressive Christian ethic to address racism in their churches. By measuring that effort in selected local associations and churches of the BGCT, however, this work demonstrates that these more progressive Texas Baptists proved more devoted to their denomination rather than to racial reformation.
초록/해제
요약 : Five significant themes determined the BGCT's inability to improve race relations as a spiritual voice in Texas. First, Texas Baptist churches accepted racial segregation within their conservative theology and never seriously considered social reform in race before and during World War II. Second, that conservative theology joined the congregational structure of BGCT churches to limit authoritative comments on race by denominational leaders during social transition after the war. Third, BGCT leaders manipulated their theology and structure to create the Christian Life Commission of Texas in 1951. As a moderate voice, however, the commission attracted little momentum in race by recognizing the BGCT's conservative theology and decentralized structure after the Brown decision. Fourth, this study considers whether or not moderate Baptists ever offered a real solution in helping end racial segregation to their congregations. Offered the choice of supporting integration as one of many social concerns by the late 1950s, most congregations followed more traditional Baptist issues and ignored race-related initiatives. Finally, race moderates in the BGCT ultimately turned to the political process by the 1960s to work for integration. When their race message included political positions on other social issues such as poverty by 1968, moderate leaders started losing their congregations. Ultimately, what began as a social application of scripture to race relations by more progressive leaders raised theological concerns within the BGCT and accelerated the split between moderate and fundamentalist forces within the modern Southern Baptist Convention.
