■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  an  analysis  of  Eugene  L.  Lowry's  theory  and  practice  of  narrative  preaching  and  its  relevance  for  preaching  in  Korean  churches.  The  introductory  chapter  of  this  dissertation  provides  clear  statement  of  purpose,  summarizes  the  background  of  the  proposal,  and  describes  the  methodology.
■520    ▼aChapter  two  focuses  on  Eugene  L.  Lowry's  theory  of  narrative  preaching:  (1)upsetting  the  equilibrium  (what  Eugene  Lowry  calls  the  Oops!  stage),  (2)analyzing  the  discrepancy  (the  Ugh!),  (3)disclosing  the  clue  to  resolution  (the  Aha),  (4)experiencing  the  gospel  (the  Whee!),  and  (5)anticipating  the  consequences  (the  Yeah!).  These  five  stages  are  explored  in  order  to  understand  more  completely  Lowry's  view  of  the  homiletical  plot  in  narrative  preaching.  This  chapter  also  addresses  the  definition  of  narrative  preaching  by  examining  the  homiletical  literature  of  the  narrative  form  and  the  various  understandings  of  narrative  preaching  as  one  type  of  a  sermon.  The  primary  functional  theories  in  the  field  of  narrative  preaching  are  explored  as  resources  for  this  section.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  examines  Eugene  L.  Lowry's  practice  of  narrative  preaching.  Lowry  deals  with  four  categories  in  the  narrative  sermon:  running  the  story,  delaying  the  story,  suspending  the  story,  and  alternating  the  story.  This  section  includes  a  brief  history  of  narrative  preaching  and  the  examination  of  the  sermon  of  Eugene  Lowry  and  several  other  preachers.
■520    ▼aChapter  four  then  explores  the  current  preaching  styles  of  Korean  churches.  A  brief  history  of  Korean  preaching  style  from  the  missionary  period  to  the  contemporary  is  examined  in  this  chapter.  This  chapter  includes  the  sociocultural  background  of  Korean  people  to  support  this  section.  The  dissertation  concludes  with  a  summary  of  evaluation  of  the  contribution  of  this  study,  and  with  suggestions  for  further  studies.
