요약 : In this dissertation, we intend to examine the nature and meaning of marriage as an order of creation. The dissertation will focus on the problem: Is there evidence in Genesis for believing God made marriage to be a covenant relationship; and if so, how must it affect the way one understands moral boundaries surrounding the marriage relationship? The thesis guiding this dissertation will be that God, at creation, designed and established marriage to be a covenant relationship, and that understanding the covenant nature of biblical marriage will shed special insight on the value and significance of moral standards God says should govern the practice of human marriage.

요약 : Examining whether God made marriage to be a covenant relationship in the creation account in Genesis is important for three reasons. First, the nature of marriage in the created order is critical because it reveals something about what God designed marriage to be before it was distorted by sin. What did God expect of Adam with respect to Eve, and what did he expect of Eve in relation to Adam? And how then has sin affected our practice of marriage as compared to God's original design? Here, the first chapters of Genesis are obviously key, but later passages referring back to the creation account are also relevant because of the way they affect proper interpretation of the Genesis account.

요약 : Second, the covenant understanding of marriage is important because it lies at the heart of feminist and homosexual attacks upon standards of sexual moral behavior taught in the church and reflected in the culture. The power of these philosophical interest groups is growing. Every mainline denomination is contending with issues regarding same-sex unions, divorce, non-monogamous sex, infidelity, and non-married parenting, and political bodies are moving to revise laws on marriage in ways that increasingly favor relationships the Bible condemns as immoral.

요약 : Third, this topic is important because it affects so many other areas of life. Marriage is a moral hub that connects with moral thinking about many sexual issues such as homosexuality, adultery, gender roles, divorce, contraception, and pro-creation. Any clarification of God's design for marriage is sure to shed light on many other related issues. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
