요약 : During the Protestant Reformation the Church experienced a dramatic shift in its thought regarding the morality of usury. Therefore, it is not surprising to find that the leaders of the three theological streams in the continental Protestant Reformation all worked to reform Roman Catholic moral teaching on the practice of lending money at interest. It is interesting to note, however, that while these three theological streams each addressed the same moral problem, at relatively the same time, all three responded differently. The purpose of this dissertation is to look at how the leader or leaders of each major stream in the continental Protestant Reformation took a different approach to reforming Christian moral teaching on the practice of usury.

요약 : The few scholars who have studied the issue have suggested that in the formation of their ethics of usury Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the leaders of the Anabaptist movement were influenced by factors such as their respective environments and their knowledge of economic principles. While these factors undoubtedly did have some influence upon the reformers' financial thought, it is the thesis of this dissertation that the primary reason Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the leaders of the Anabaptist movement espoused varying positions regarding the morality of usury is that they each held different views regarding the nature of the relationship between Church and culture.
초록/해제
요약 : The first chapter of this project introduces the reader to the topic of usury by explaining how the Protestant Reformation played a pivotal role in the area of economic reform. The second chapter reviews the status quo position of the Roman Catholic Church on usury leading up to the Reformation. Chapters three, four, and five of this work cover the different ways Martin Luther, John Calvin, and the leaders of the Anabaptist movement each approached the moral reform of the practice of usury. In conclusion, the last chapter reviews the ways in which the three major streams in the continental Protestant Reformation approached the reformation of the practice of usury and shows how in each case their differing views on the relationship between Church and culture is the factor that most directly explains their differences on the morality of lending money at interest.
