요약 : This dissertation examines Luke's development of a meal motif in the light of three inter-related hermeneutical contexts. The first is the branch of anthropology known as “foodways” which explores the cultural significance of comestibles, cooking and commensality. The two major theoretical approaches to contemporary foodways research, namely structuralist and materialist, the former emphasizing the semiotic and symbolic dimension of food and meals, the latter the socio-economic and political dimensions, are both utilized to demonstrate the holistic nature of the meal practices of Jesus.

요약 : The second context is provided by the extensive tradition of food-related material in the OT. This material expresses a number of theological themes that inform Luke's development of a meal motif: the covenant faithfulness of Yahweh, the call to be a hospitable people in imitation of Yahweh the divine host, and the particular responsibility to be inclusive of the marginalized and disadvantaged. It is further observed that Israel's future, as well as its past, is "gastronomically expressed" by the developing motif of the eschatological banquet conveying such themes as God's triumph, material blessedness and the inclusion of the nations. These themes also inform Luke's depiction of the meals of Jesus.

요약 : The third context is the comparative analysis of meal traditions in Greco-Roman and Jewish culture with a particular focus upon the symposion tradition, meals of the Caesars, the Roman convivium and the commensality of the Pharisees, the Essenes and the Therapeutae. The dissertation seeks to demonstrate that these meals were not only means of providing physical nourishment but served a number of social, political and religious purposes. Among these were the expression and maintenance of power, status and social structures; providing a context for philosophical discussion and entertainment; the delineation and control of group boundaries; the embodiment of eschatological conviction; the reflection of hierarchy, rank and order within religious communities; a means of discipline; and the indication of attitudes toward material reality. An awareness of these themes and their expression in particular Greco-Roman and Jewish traditions, serves to highlight the distinctiveness of the social and religious vision expressed by and embodied in the foodways of Jesus as depicted by Luke.

요약 : Chapter 4, the longest in the dissertation, is an exegetical study of three types of meal scenes in Luke's gospel: meals with women, meals with Pharisees and meals with outcasts. The first of these highlights the themes of servanthood and gender inclusivity, the second, the radically different understandings of the covenant community represented by the Pharisees and Jesus, and the third, the holistic presentation of salvation as uniting spiritual, communal and economic liberation.

요약 : Finally, the dissertation connects these meal scenes and related material with Luke's theological agenda demonstrating that the foodways motif is central to the entire two-volume work.
