초록/해제: 요약 : This dissertation attempts to demonstrate that the background of John's baptism can be understood sufficiently in light of the Old Testament. By examining the Old Testament in the Gospel accounts of John and by testing the hypothesis, from a preparatory perspective, this thesis argues that John's baptism, as a ritual of repentance for the forgiveness of sin, finds its ultimate background in the Old Testament cleansing and sacrificial systems.

초록/해제: 요약 : This dissertation includes five chapters. Chapter one surveys all the current views suggested as possible antecedents of John's baptism. The second chapter provides an analysis of John's ministry in light of the Old Testament. Chapter three, as the first test for the hypothesis, will examine John's baptism in relationship to ritual cleansing and sacrifice in the Old Testament with the theme of the inadequacy of the Old Testament systems as the ultimate basis for cleansing and atonement. The fourth chapter, as the second test, is a research of John's baptism in the context of Second Temple Judaism, focusing on John's contemporaries, their relationship to the temple rites, and John's understanding of the rites. The last chapter, as the final test, is a study of John's baptism in the context of early Christianity including the issues of the atoning motifs in the Gospels and the relationship between his baptism and the death of Jesus.
