■520    ▼aOne  significant  aspect  of  baptism  is  its  close  relationship  to  the  nature  of  the  church.  To  define  baptism  correctly  is  indispensable  for  identifying  the  church  correctly.  The  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  show  that  Hubmaier  offered  a  baptismal  theology  representing  a  new  development  in  the  view  of  the  church,  which  broke  the  pattern  of  the  Augustinian,  medieval  church.  This  thesis  is  demonstrated  by  comparing  the  baptismal  understanding  of  four  major  figures  who  represented  specific  ecclesiastical  traditions:  Augustine  for  the  Catholics,  Luther  for  the  Lutherans,  Zwingli  for  the  early  Reformed  Christians,  and  Hubmaier  for  the  Anabaptists.

■520    ▼aThe  work  of  comparison  in  this  dissertation  is  done  progressively.  Chapter  one  focuses  on  Augustine's  views  on  baptism  without  comparison  to  other  views.  This  chapter  shows  Augustine's  shaping  of  his  baptismal  views  through  coping  with  the  Donatist  and  Pelagian  controversies.  His  baptismal  views  focused  on  the  unity  of  the  Catholic  Church  and  the  necessity  for  the  cleansing  of  original  sin  by  baptism.
■520    ▼aChapter  two  discusses  Luther's  baptismal  views  and  compares  them  to  those  of  Augustine.  This  chapter  examines  the  development  of  Luther's  views  in  different  historical  situations  and  shows  that  his  points  of  emphasis  in  baptism  varied  as  he  faced  different  opponents,  first  the  Catholics  and  then  the  Anabaptists.  Ultimately,  his  baptismal  views  largely  followed  the  Augustinian  tradition  and  were  inherently  Catholic.
■520    ▼aChapter  three  discusses  Zwingli's  views  of  baptism  and  compares  them  to  Augustine's  and  Luther's.  Research  shows  that  Zwingli  went  further  away  than  Luther  from  the  Catholic  tradition  but  did  not  break  from  it  completely  because  he  retained  infant  baptism.  Zwingli's  covenant  theology  is  also  discussed  here.
■520    ▼aFinally,  chapter  four  discusses  Hubmaier's  views  of  baptism  and  provides  a  full-scale  comparison  of  Hubmaier's  views  with  the  other  three.  This  chapter  shows  that  Hubmaier  introduced  a  more  biblically  sound  understanding  of  baptism  than  these  other  ecclesiastical  representatives.  He  avoided  falling  into  either  Augustinian  sacramentalism  or  Zwinglian  spiritualism.
