요약 : One of the keys to understanding the book of Revelation is recognizing John's dependence on and his transformation of the Old Testament. Several studies have focused on various Old Testament sources and their impact on Revelation, but no investigation has been made of John's use of Zechariah. This dissertation establishes the background for John's work as a prophetic interpreter, examines and evaluates proposed allusions to Zechariah, and discusses the theological significance of John's reliance on specific passages from Zechariah.

요약 : The most important sources for this project include the Masoretic Text (MT), the Septuagint (LXX), the Aramaic Targums, various Rabbinic sources, and the Greek New Testament. Various translations and critical editions were consulted to complement these primary sources. Commentaries, journal articles, monographs, essays, dictionaries, lexicons, and dissertations provided further background, insight, and dialogue. Attention was also given to French and German sources.

요약 : In order to understand John's use of the Old Testament, one must first define John's hermeneutical background. Chapter 1 establishes John's role as a prophetic exegete within the early Church. His fusion of prophetic and apocalyptic elements provides a unique and powerful interpretation of various Old Testament themes, traditions, and texts. Chapter 2 examines potential allusions to Zechariah, weighing collectively the literary, contextual, structural, thematic, and traditional connectors that indicate John's dependence upon a certain text. Chapter 3 addresses Zechariah's impact on John's theology, as well as John's adaptation of Zechariah's text through his own theological perspective.
초록/해제
요약 : In observing John's use of Zechariah, it is evident that John depends on the MT more than the LXX, and more on the "Night Visions" of Zechariah than on the historical or apocalyptic sections. The vision of the four horses and their riders is especially influential for John's structure in Revelation 6-11. His use of Zechariah focuses on God's presence as judgment and salvation. John draws several images of judgment from Zechariah, including the four riders, the mourning of the people at the sight of Christ's return, and the coming eschatological battle. The John presents images of God's salvation through the menorah of Zechariah 4, including God's presence as Spirit, the deity of the Lamb, and the witness of the Church.
