■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  seeks  to  apply  a  communal  approach  for  pastoral  caregiving  to  Korean  Americans,  in  keeping  with  twenty-first-century  society's  trends.  It  emphasizes  the  communal  aspects  of  Korean  Americans  living  in  an  individualistic  and  cultural  pluralistic  society.  This  dissertation  strives  to  develop  an  approach  faithful  to  the  biblical  paradigm  of  Christian  community  rather  than  set  in  the  professional  psychotherapeutic  office.  Four  communal  modes  of  brief  pastoral  caregiving  are  introduced  with  particular  focus  on  the  solution-focused  approach,  followed  by  applications  of  the  model.
■520    ▼aThe  primary  methodology  employed  in  this  study  is  a  literature  review  and  analysis  of  pastoral  caregivng  sources  and  related  studies.  The  literature  provides  empirical  data  along  with  theological  reflection  that  help  develop  the  foundation  and  structure  of  the  paper.  A  synthesis  of  literature  produces  the  alternative  paradigm  of  brief  pastoral  caregiving,  sensitive  to  the  cultural  context  of  Korean  Americans  and  the  biblical  context  of  community.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  does  not  deny  the  benefits  of  the  traditional  individual  psychotherapeutic  approach;  rather,  it  highlights  its  inadequacies  and  offers  an  approach  to  pastoral  caregiving  set  in  the  communal  context  of  the  church.  Such  an  approach  applies  more  appropriately  to  Korean  culture  and  is  more  in  keeping  with  the  biblical  concept  of  community.
■520    ▼aThe  historical  trends  of  pastoral  caregiving  fall  into  three  paradigms:  classical,  clinical  pastoral,  and  communal  contextual.  With  its  focus  on  the  communal  approach,  a  thorough  description  of  the  history  of  pastoral  caregiving  goes  beyond  the  scope  of  this  paper.  Although  this  writer  presents  some  biblical  and  theological  notions  of  community,  it  does  not  attempt  further  theological  or  historical  discussion  on  pastoral  theology  and  caregiving.
■520    ▼aOne  essential  feature  of  the  communal  approach  to  pastoral  caregiving  is  the  utilization  of  the  laity  whose  talents  and  commitments  have  vitalized  Korean  churches.  Research  on  the  effectiveness  of  lay  caregiving  prove  its  wide  application  in  varied  contexts.  While  acknowledging  this,  however,  this  paper  limits  its  study  to  the  practice  of  lay  pastoral  caregiving  and  its  implication  on  the  communal  context  of  local  Korean-American  churches.
■520    ▼aThis  paper  concludes  by  developing  four  communal  modes  of  brief  pastoral  caregiving:  short-term,  solution/growth-oriented,  lay-guided,  and  circular.  With  these  guiding  criteria,  pastoral  caregiving  can  remain  faithful  to  the  biblical  mandates  and  can  meet  the  specific  needs  of  Korean  Americans.
