요약 : This dissertation contends that baptism initiates a person into an ongoing experience of Christian growth and maturing which is a process of continuing conversion. Baptismal identity is argued to be a changing identity in which liturgizing has a potentially significant role.

요약 : The argument proceeds as follows. First, the dissertation establishes a theological basis for an understanding of the baptismal life as one of ongoing change and conversion as a Christian continues to grow and mature in Christ-and-the-Spirit. The first chapter distinguishes between the doctrinal, ecclesial, divine perspective which asserts that the church's sacramental doctrine defines sacramental efficacy, and the personal phenomenological operational perspective which expects sacramental efficacy to be experienced in the ongoing lives of the baptized. Both perspectives must be accounted for in any complete baptismal theology and in any ecclesiology which understands "church" to be the body of those baptized into Christ Jesus. Chapter two proposes the catechumenal process as a model for the post-baptismal process. Chapters three and four provide theological underpinning for the processual baptismal life from the theologies of theosis, that humans become like God; human life as eucharistic thanks-gift to God in response to baptism; and faith development stage theory for common patterns of human maturing.

요약 : Second, the role of liturgy or liturgizing in post-baptismal process is taken up in chapter five through lenses of ritual theory. The encounter with ritual theory suggests that the role of liturgists is less to create rites and more to develop the ritual competence to engender ritualizations as they are needed, pointing to the need for ritual competence and resourcefulness, the cultivation of ritual sensitivity in church leaders and the support of such gifts in church members. I then point to three nodal moments which could be well served by Christian ritualization. In exploring them, I offer five principles or criteria with which to guide such ritualizing.

요약 : We conclude that both for the sake of its own baptized members which is itself; the ecclesia, and for the sake of contemporary North American culture which struggles with ritualizing outside the groundedness of historic traditions, what is needed for a realized baptismal ecclesiology is the nonnative willingness of the Church to recognize that creative ritualization is part of the process of a deified growing, maturing Christian (baptized) life just as it was (is) part of the process of a catechumen converting to God-in-Christ-and-the-Spirit. And what is needed is the allowing of the Body of Christ to celebrate theopoetic moments in the lives of persons of Christ so that the relationship of the personal and the communal is strengthened. The principles of Christian post-baptismal ritualization articulated here provide a starting place both for enabling and forming the ecclesia for their ministry in the world and for developing ritualizing competence among the baptized.
