- 요약 : Jesse Mercer (1769-1841) was a Baptist pastor in Georgia, editor of a religious periodical, and denominational statesman who figured prominently in the debates over Calvinism among southern Baptist clergymen. To the extent that historians have explored the role of Calvinism in American religious history, the contributions of Jonathan Edwards, the New Divinity movement, and the Princeton theologians have garnered the most attention. Calvinistic theology, however, played a key role in shaping the religious mind of the South. Although southern clergymen concerned themselves less with theology proper than did their northern counterparts, they frequently discussed the relationship between divine sovereignty and human responsibility as it related to missions, education, and social reform. These debates eventually led to the formation of two Baptist groups, Missionary and Primitive.

- 요약 : This dissertation explores the role of Jesse Mercer within these debates as he helped establish mission work and educational institutions through cooperative efforts while maintaining Calvinistic principles. For him, the sending of missionaries was the God-ordained means by which the elect could hear the gospel and experience the regenerating power of the Holy Spirit. He also believed that preachers were best prepared for their task by being exposed to theological training. Moreover, Jesse Mercer advocated cooperation between churches as the most effective approach in fulfilling the Great Commission. Though he was accused by others of abandoning his Calvinistic heritage, this dissertation demonstrates that he remained within the boundaries of regular Calvinism while promoting missions, education, and cooperation. His work toward these ends demonstrates the value southern clergymen placed upon doctrinal matters and is informative about the nuances of Calvinistic thought existent among Baptists early in the nineteenth century.
